My top 5 things to avoid when choosing your wedding flowers

Flowers to be used in a display for the ‘Rainbow Sherbet’ colour palette in September including dahlias, cosmos, delphinium, ammi and scabious.

Planning your wedding is an incredibly exciting time and I know you want everything to be just perfect.

As fun and exciting as it can be, it can also be incredibly overwhelming with so many decisions to make. My job is not only to provide flowers on the big day, but to guide you through the process of choosing the best possible options for your unique tastes and circumstances.

I’ve put together my list of things to avoid when choosing your wedding flowers, based on mistakes other couples (including myself!) have made. Let’s work together to eliminate unnecessary stress from the start!

1. Going over budget

Let’s address this super important one first as I know it’s often the one people don’t like talking about! I want you to have wedding flowers you love but also don’t have to worry about paying for. I recommend setting yourselves a clear budget and sticking to it. This is one of the very reasons I designed the ‘Happily Ever After’ Collection - you can see exactly what you are spending as you build your package. This gives endless options to suit all budgets (you can find some examples in my free guide) and I love it when couples re-purpose all their arrangements by moving them from ceremony to reception. It’s so easy to do and you’ll make the flowers work twice as hard for your money - getting the absolute most out of them. If you’re stuck with this, I will always honestly recommend the best way to achieve the maximum impact for your chosen spend.

2. Waste

I hate waste and one element of this ties in really nicely to my suggestion about budget above. As much as possible, I will create designs for you that can easily be repurposed throughout your day - avoiding waste and saving you money. For example, I often suggest moving items from the ceremony into the reception. Every itme in the Happily Ever After Collection is designed so this is easy, mess and fuss free. Often the venue staff are more than happy to help with this if your ceremony and reception is taking place at the same venue, or you can assign the task to a family member, groomsman or bridesmaid.

The other part of this is the actual waste that the wedding flowers produce when you are completely finished with them. In line with the Delilah and Herb sustainable ethos, I do not use floral foam and instead choose reusable or recyclable materials, consciously creating the minimal amount of waste for every wedding I work on. It’s such a good feeling to dismantle a whole wedding knowing that almost nothing is going to landfill!

3. Scatter-bombing

This is the affectionate term I’ve coined to describe couples who come to me believing that their money is better spent on a series of smaller items, as opposed to one large one. A little caveat here as every case is individual and I do love stem vases, but on the whole - your money is far better spent on one larger item.

Let me explain why!

Unless there are lots of them (which can actually be more expensive), smaller items can ‘get lost’. Once the room is full of people, they can’t be seen and they certainly won’t be making memories in your photographs. If on the other hand, you choose one larger item, a ‘feature item’ - it will make an impact, you can re-purpose it from ceremony to reception, use it for lovely photographs and most importantly, people will notice it!

4. Not using the venues features to enhance your flowers

Have a careful think about your venue - does it have a garden? What might be in bloom in the garden at the time of your wedding? Are there any features of the venue that you particularly love? Where might you have photographs taken?

Having answers to these questions helps you decide which flowers will work the best and create the most impact. It also helps you decide what may not be needed and where else your budget can be spent.

5. Blindly following trends

Please don’t get me wrong - sometimes trends are fantastic and provide a ton of inspiration but please only choose something if it feels authentic to you. It will never sit quite right if you try to force a certain style or design because it’s popular, as opposed to honouring what actually captures your story, tastes and personalities. This is 100% the time for ‘you to do YOU!’.

I put just as much care into creating my Happily Ever After Collection as I would for a fully custom design. While these flowers aren’t made for a specific couple, each piece is thoughtfully crafted to be effortlessly beautiful, seasonally unique, and full of the natural, romantic style Delilah & Herb is known for.

Every wedding deserves stunning flowers, and the Happily Ever After Collection makes it easy to have flowers that feel special, meaningful, and unforgettable.
